Wayne Rooney debuts for D.C. United in win over Vancouver Whitecaps

Former English Premier League star Wayne Rooney made his Major League Soccer debut on Saturday, coming off the bench to help D.C. United beat the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 in the first match at United’s new stadium.

Paul Arriola scored two goals for United, which inserted Rooney in the 58th minute. He assisted on Arriola’s second goal, a deep blast that made it 3-0 in the 80th minute.

The 32-year-old Rooney, who signed a 3½-year designated-player contract with MLS on July 10, is the all-time leading scorer for England’s national team and Manchester United in the EPL.
